About the Course

This study explores the reasons behind suicidal ideation in Black young adults using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to uncover patterns in their reported motivations. Among the sample of 264 participants, the most frequently cited reason for considering suicide was hopelessness about the future. The study identified three latent classes describing distinct experiences: feelings of failure and hopelessness, extreme loneliness, and more generalized hopelessness combined with other reasons. Gender differences were also observed, with Black women more likely to report reasons tied to interpersonal expectations and loneliness. The findings emphasize the need for culturally grounded interventions and further exploration of the factors contributing to hopelessness, loneliness, and failure in this population.

This course is based on the reading online article, Reasons for Suicide in Black Young Adults created by Janelle R. Goodwill, Ph.D in 2023.
