About the Event

Supervising individuals who work with couples presents unique issues that may or not arise when supervising individuals who work exclusively with individuals. The seminar will attempt to identify and review many of the common problems and challenges of clinical supervision working with that client group. Legal and risk-management issues will be identified and reviewed, along with potential solutions. The roles and responsibilities of the supervisor and supervisee will be examined and techniques to identify goals and objectives of supervision defined. Specific problem situations that may occur in supervision of therapists working with couples such as the definition of the client, confidentiality, therapeutic neutrality, iatrogenic risks, changes in format, live supervision, subpoenas, testifying, and recordkeeping will be discussed.

George B Haarman, Psy.D, LMFT

George B Haarman, Psy.D, LMFT, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with more than 40 years of experience. A member of the American Psychological Association and Kentucky Psychological Association, Dr. Haarman is currently in private practice in Louisville, Kentucky, and serves as a consultant to several school systems regarding the assessment of children. For 24 years, Dr. Haarman worked in the Department of Human Services in Louisville, serving as the Deputy Director for the last 12 years of his tenure there. His prior experience with DHS included working with youth detention centers, juvenile group homes, child protective services, and juvenile probation. Dr. Haarman received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Spalding University and has been an instructor at Jefferson Community College, Bellarmine University, and Spalding University. Because of his years of experience in mental health, he has presented seminars regionally and nationally on psychopathology, depression, and emotional disorders in adults. He is also the author of School Refusal: Children Who Can’t or Won’t Go to School, Clinical Supervision: Legal, Ethical, and Risk Management Issues, and Mastering DSM-5.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss “hot button issues” for working with couples, such as impairment, sexual attraction, dual relationships, competence, technology changes, and negligence.
  2. 2 Describe the unique legal and ethical issues of supervising individuals who work with couples and families including: child abuse reporting, duty to warn, confidentiality and minors, definition of the client, therapeutic neutrality, changes in format, live supervision, subpoenas, testifying, and recordkeeping.
  3. 3 Discuss issues for those supervising individuals working with couples, such as infidelity, divorce, fairness, dual relationships, keeping secrets, the duty to warn, duty to protect, and therapist competency.
