About the Event

This workshop introduces practitioners to a mindfulness practice and therapeutic tool that melds Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with a focus on integrating power dynamics. This approach addresses the often implicit and unspoken power dynamics within therapeutic relationships, making these dynamics explicit so that the practitioner can mindfully hold their power with more responsibility and heart. When integrated with the core teachings of Nonviolent Communication, which improves empathic engagement and communication of needs and feelings, this approach enriches therapeutic presence, therapeutic effectiveness, and client care.

Ki Smith

Ki (she/they) is an IFS-Trained Contemplative Psychotherapist, affiliated teacher with the Right Use of Power Institute, and a facilitator, mediator, and coach in the realm of compassionate communication, power-consciousness, and conflict transformation. In her private practice, Warrior Wisdom, Ki works with individuals and people in intimate relationships of all kinds who want to heal relationally by learning how to turn towards inner and outer conflict whenever possible with slowness, curiosity, kindness, and the intention to hold that multiple truths are possible and probable. She also offers a 12-week course which builds these skills and is rooted in the integration of The Right Use of Power™, Nonviolent Communication, and Internal Family Systems, entitled "Language for the Open-Hearted Warrior." Ki is passionate about co-creating a beloved community with others and understanding the integral role this plays in the transformational healing of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systemic suffering. She believes that the heart of healing ourselves and our world is coming home to the truth: we each and all inherently belong–and that we truly need one another to remember this truth.

Target Audience

This live interactive webinar is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify power dynamics within therapeutic relationships, highlighting the importance of recognizing and responsibly managing power differentials.
  2. 2 Summarize the foundational aspects of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) that support empathic listening and effective expression of feelings and needs.
  3. 3 Demonstrate how integrating power dynamics with NVC helps manage power dynamics mindfully while facilitating empathic communication.
  4. 4 Demonstrate practical strategies for employing the integration of NVC with power dynamics in real-world therapeutic contexts, emphasizing the balance between power consciousness and empathic engagement.
