About the Event

“Dramatic,” “crazy,” “overly emotional” – these are just some of the ways in which women have been described when simply expressing their needs and feelings. As result, many women might suppress their emotions, as well as their own voices. Numerous empirical studies demonstrate the evidence of adverse psychological effects of invalidation, emotional abuse, and emotion suppression. Using popular culture as a bridge for understanding and skill-building can be an empowering tool in every provider’s toolbox, allowing clients to feel understood, and making it safer for people to process their mental health experiences. The worldwide fascination with popular culture, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Wonder Woman, and the Avengers is popular for a very good reason – these stories allow people to feel less alone, to be more supported. For decades now, these films, books, and TV shows have reflected people's mental health struggles, including PTSD, grief, anxiety, and depression. This webinar will focus on strategies that can be utilized to assist our clients who identify as women in discovering their voice, setting boundaries, and helping them to manage their anxiety and PTSD through popular culture stories, such as Batwoman, Jessica Jones, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Capes are optional.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Janina Scarlet is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, author, and a full-time geek. A Ukrainian-born refugee, she survived Chernobyl radiation and persecution. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 with her family and later, inspired by the X-Men, developed Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Dr. Scarlet is the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award by the United Nations Association for her work on Superhero Therapy. Her work has been featured on Yahoo, BBC, NPR, Sunday Times, CNN, CW, ABC, Huffington Post, The New York Times, Forbes, the Nerdist, BuzzFeed, and many other outlets. She currently works at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Management in San Diego. She authored Superhero Therapy, Harry Potter Therapy, Therapy Quest, Dark Agents, Super-Women, Supernatural Therapy, as well as numerous contributions to Star Wars Psychology, Star Trek Psychology, Wonder Woman Psychology, Supernatural Psychology and many other books.
