About the Event

Dementia affects millions of individuals and families in the United States and requires coordinated, interprofessional care. This webinar provides an overview of dementia prevalence, the four major types of dementia, their clinical characteristics, and the importance of early recognition and differential diagnosis, including distinguishing dementia from delirium. Participants will also examine modifiable risk factors, caregiver considerations, community resources, and practical strategies for supporting individuals experiencing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

The session will review safety considerations, environmental supports, and evidence-based interventions—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Reminiscence Therapy, Validation Therapy, and environmental modifications—that promote quality of life for individuals living with dementia. Emphasis will be placed on practical, person-centered approaches that support patients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary care teams across healthcare settings.

Christina Marsack-Topolewski

Christina Marsack-Topolewski

Dr. Christina Marsack-Topolewski is an associate professor of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski received her PhD in Social Work with a dual title in Gerontology from Wayne State University. She has worked with individuals with various intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for 20 years. Her research focuses on individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, their caregivers, advance care planning, the service delivery model, and service utilization. She has over 90 publications in national and international journals and encyclopedias, mainly focusing on individuals with IDDs, caregiving, as well as services and supports. In addition, she has presented her work locally, nationally, and internationally.

Target Audience

This live interactive is intended for Physical Health and Behavioral Health professionals, including occupational therapies, physicians, pharmacies, physician assistants, addiction counselors, art therapists, behavior analysts, counselors, psychologists, school psychologists, social workers, nurses, and psychoanalysts. It is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  2. 2 Differentiate among the four major types of dementia and recognize their key clinical characteristics.
  3. 3 Explain the relationship between modifiable risk factors and dementia risk, and identify strategies that may support risk reduction.
  4. 4 Identify evidence-based interventions, environmental supports, and community resources that enhance quality of life for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
