About the Course

Parental separation, violence in the home, seeing a shooting at school, the death of a loved one—all these events can affect a child’s development, health, socialization, school performance, family interactions, and self-esteem. Trauma in the Lives of Children uses an interdisciplinary, solution-based approach that bridges the gap between clinic and school. It explains how children react to specific types of trauma, how to recognize and address a traumatized child, and what professionals and families can do to help traumatized children.

This expanded second edition covers the nationwide movement toward School Crisis Response Teams; the DSM-IV’s new category for post-traumatic stress; and the use of EMDR as a post-trauma treatment modality. A special chapter on trauma prevention helps schools and families prepare for crises in order to keep the effects of trauma to a minimum.

This course is based on the book, Trauma in the Lives of Children: Crisis and Stress Management Techniques for Counselors Teachers and Other Professionals created by Kendall Johnson, Ph.D.
