About the Course

This hour-long video presentation, from SAMHSA’s Recovery Month webcast series, explores the role of faith and faith-based organizations in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. It discusses pastoral counseling, interventions, and other recovery services offered by faith-based organizations as well as the need for pastoral training.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Explain the role of faith in addressing addiction, the manner in which pastors often deal with the issue, and training needed.
  2. 2 Identify components of successful faith-based addiction programs and discuss the advantages a member of the clergy may have in addressing an addiction problem.
  3. 3 Discuss the faith of substance abusers and the qualities of those in the congregation who may be of most help in addressing addiction issues.
