About the Course

Considerable research has focused on cognitive performance characteristics which can best discriminate healthy aging from the earliest stages of Alzheimer disease. Of increasing importance is the identification of potential biomarkers that may help facilitate early detection of the disease. This study examined the utility of combining attentional control with semantic retrieval as a sensitive correlate of such biomarkers and used mediation analyses to examine possible mechanisms by which identified Alzheimer disease biomarkers influence cognition.

This course is based on the article, Alzheimer Disease Biomarkers, Attentional Control and Semantic Memory Retrieval: Synergistic and Mediational Effects of Biomarkers on a Sensitive Cognitive Measure created by Andrew Aschenbrenner, PhD et al. in 2015.

He has published multiple articles and presented at several conferences.
David Balota, PhD
Dr. Balota is a Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences and Neurology at Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Balota works on issues related to visual word recognition, semantic memory, priming on implicit memory tests, and attention systems that modulate performance within each of these domains. He investigates these phenomena within young adults, older adults, and individuals who have dementing illnesses such as senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type. He has published multiple articles in this area.
