About the Course

The negative consequences of traumatic experiences are well documented in the literature and includes such difficulties as PTSD, substance abuse, premature mortality, and suicidality. An emerging area of research as it pertains to traumatic stress reactions is that of positive psychology, and more specifically, posttraumatic growth. Most would consider posttraumatic growth to be inherently positive, but the research suggests that it can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. This article presents findings of a study that examined the association between posttraumatic growth and loneliness in a cohort of combat veterans of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Dr. Jacob Y. Stein, (Cobi), is a research fellow in the Israeli Center of Research excellence (I-CORE) for the investigation of mass trauma (http://www.icore-masstrauma.org/), and a post-doctoral fellow under the supervision of Prof. Charles R. Figley and Prof. Zahava Solomon. Throughout his research career, Dr. Stein has conducted research in various domains relating to combat and war captivity induced posttraumatic reactions. Jacob’s domain of expertise lies with loneliness after combat related trauma and the phenomenology of trauma and its aftermath. His work has been published in several peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, as well as presented in several international conferences.

Dr. Henderson completed her PhD in clinical psychology at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda MD, and my internship at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Medical Center in San Antonio TX. She is am an integrative therapist who focuses on brief, positive, solutions-focused therapy and is experienced in treating a variety of mental health concerns-- depression, anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, parenting concerns, and more. She is currently practicing in Alaska.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who work with veterans. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.
