About the Course

The Office of the Surgeon General and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) developed this Spotlight on Opioids from the Surgeon General’s Report, in order to provide opioid-related information in one, easy-to-read document. Although Spotlight on Opioids does not include new scientific information, it provides the latest data on prevalence of substance use, opioid misuse, opioid use disorders, opioid overdoses, and related harms. This document sometimes discusses substance use disorders rather than opioid use disorder specifically. The general principles related to substance use disorders often apply to opioid use disorder.

This course is based on the article, Facing Addiction in America-The Surgeon General’s Spotlight on Opioids created by Office of the Surgeon General in 2018.

She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge the prevalence of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder.
  2. 2 Identify the components of care, to prevent patients from slipping through the crack of various systems.
  3. 3 Extrapolate the data gleaned from evidence-based practices to identify and treat opioid misuse and opioid use disorder.
