About the Course

This course addresses a new look at motivation, motivational counseling and brief intervention. It includes: motivation and behavior change, changing perspectives on addiction and treatment, Transtheoretical Model of the Stages of Change, elements of effective motivational counseling approaches, motivational counseling and the Stages of Change, special applications of motivational interventions, brief motivational interventions, screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment.

This course is based on the Executive Summary, Chapter 1 and 2, TIP 35-Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment created by SAMHSA in 2019.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge motivational approaches are the most researched and currently the most supported approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.
  2. 2 Identify the stages of change, and catalysts for change.
  3. 3 Summarize the most effective motivational approaches.
