About the Course

This course provides a careful overview of the empirically supported treatments for disruptive behavior disorders in adolescents. These interventions consist mostly of work with parents that integrate behavioral techniques, strategies for enforcing rules, and ways of increasing affection between parents and teen. The relevant outcome research is summarized in a user-friendly fashion, and the course explains how this research can be integrated with clinical assessments of etiology to individualize treatment for each client. The course equips therapists to guide parents in formulating rules and consequences, using hierarchies of negative consequences to gain control over adolescents who defy punishments, ending arguments that have gone on too long, resisting provocation by disrespectful teens, and using noncontingent expressions of warmth to heal the parent-child relationship. For individual work with teens, the course provides an innovative explanation of the legitimacy of parental authority and adolescents’ responsibility to comply; this reframing makes compliance seem more acceptable and honorable to many teens. There are case illustrations and numerous examples of good words to say in various clinical situations.

This course is based on chapter 11 of the book, Child and Adolescent Therapy: Science and Art, 2nd Edition created by Jeremy Shapiro in 2015.
