About the Course

This course covers the assessment and management of designer drugs, including: bath salts, cathinones, mephedrone, methylone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDMA), synthetic cannabinoids, spice, 25I-NBOMe, N-bomb, and hallucinogens. It explains: epidemiology of emerging designer drugs, slang terms, pharmacology, adverse psychiatric effects, adverse physiologic effects, and clinical effects of each drug.

This course is based on the article, Designer Drugs 2015-Assessment and Management created by Michael F. Weaver, MD et al. in 2015.

Michael F. Weaver, MD
Dr. Michael Weaver, DFASAM, is a professor and medical director at the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addictions for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Dr. Weaver primarily sees adolescents, adults and seniors with any substance use disorder or concerns about misuse of controlled substance prescription medications and does research on addiction.
John A. Hopper, MD
Dr. Hopper, MD is a practicing Hospitalist in Ypsilanti, MI. Dr. Hopper also specializes in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine.
Erik W. Gunderson, MD
Dr. Gunderson is and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences with research Interests in opioid dependence treatment in primary care, substance abuse medical education.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
