About the Course

About 40-80% of people who suffers from eating disorders has dysfunctional exercise obligations, a comorbidity found to complicate treatment outcome, hence, a reduction in physical activity during therapy is often required. Criticism over the past decade calls into question this practice, as therapeutic use of physical activity in treatment of eating disorders and other mental diseases may rather support recovery and promote health. Further, while dietary therapy and behavioural therapies have unclear empirical support in treatment of eating disorders, a combination of therapies may result in additive effects. To accommodate the need to explore more effective therapies options for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders, the purpose of this course is to present the findings from a randomized trial: comparing cognitive behaviour therapy to supervised physical exercise and dietary therapy.

This course is based on the article, s physical exercise and dietary therapy a feasible alternative to cognitive behaviour therapy in treatment of eating disorders? A randomized controlled trial of two group therapies created by Therese Fostervold Mathisen PhD et al. in 2020.
