About the Course

When Psychological Problems Mask Medical Disorders: Second Edition: A Guide for Psychotherapists (The Guilford Press, 2015) is widely regarded as a standard clinical resource. This book/course helps practitioners think outside the mental health box and recognize when a client may need a medical evaluation. Part I provides an accessible, comprehensive overview of symptoms that can be observed in a standard mental status examination and that may indicate medical illness. This book/course includes case vignettes/examples and gives clinical interviewing recommendations. Part II presents concise facts, including basic medical information, physical symptoms, and mental symptoms, including information on more than 60 diseases and syndromes. An easy-to-read chart in Part III cross-tabulates all of the disorders and symptoms for quick reference and comparison. Updates to the second edition include the following: The second edition reflects more than 15 years of advances in medical and mental health knowledge; has been updated throughout to reflect DSM-5 terminology; discusses additional medical disorders (including, but not limited to, celiac disease, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and heavy-metal toxicity); and includes updated links to further reading on each health condition.

This course is based on book by the same name that was created by James Morrison, MD in July of 2015.
