About the Course

Research on sexual/gender minority adolescents is lacking a critical piece of information regarding interventions for improving minority stress. These researchers designed a program, Proud & Empowered (P & E), to meet the needs of adolescents struggling with the stigma of the status of sexual/gender minorities. Researchers sought to gather empirical evidence to support/refute the effectiveness of their program for adolescents.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Reducing Behavioral Health Symptoms by Addressing Minority Stressors in LGBTQ Adolescents: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Proud & Empowered created by Jeremy T. Goldbach, PhD, LMSW, et al. in 2022.

Jeremy T. Goldbach, PhD, LMSW
Dr. Goldbach joined the Brown School after nearly a decade with the University of Southern California. His work is primarily focused on measuring, understanding and intervening upon experiences of minority stress and discrimination among LGBTQ+ children and adolescents. Goldbach's work in the area has been continuously funded since 2012 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Department of Defense (DOD) and through foundations. He has published more than 100 works in peer reviewed journals.
Harmony Rhoades, PhD. (Sociology)
Harmony Rhoades joined USC as a postdoctoral research associate in 2010. Her research interests include the intersection of numerous social and biological factors that may influence health outcomes, including housing and homelessness, social networks, gender, sexuality, mental health, and substance use. As Research Faculty, Rhoades is an active collaborator with prominent faculty dedicated to understanding and ending homelessness and improving health and mental health for marginalized populations. She has served as Co-Investigator on several NIH-funded research projects focused on homelessness, social relationships, aging, substance use, mental health, and sexual and gender minority populations. She has published more than 100 works in peer reviewed journals.
Mary Rose Mamey, PhD., MA
Dr. Mamey is an Assistant Research Professor at the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, University of Southern California. She has published more than 20 works in peer reviewed journals.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify three contributing factors to minority stress in sexual/gender minority adolescents.
  2. 2 List two differences in minority stress experiences and behavioral health symptomology in intervention/control groups of Proud & Empowered.
  3. 3 Identify one beneficial contributing factor to reduced behavioral health symptoms in sexual/gender minority adolescents.
