About the Course

This course is based on the book of the same title. This content focuses on addressing anxious thoughts, habits, and feelings. He discusses habit loops and concrete ways to work with clients to break detrimental loops and build healthy habits. Case studies are included to help illustrate important points and interventions.

This course is based on the book, Unwinding Anxiety created by Judson Brewer, MD, PhD. in 2023.

Judson Brewer, MD, PhD. Is the director of research and innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center He is also an associate professor at the Medical School at Brown University. Dr. Brewer has developed multiple apps for assisting with anxiety, smoking and weight issues. He provides efficacy research of his work in this book, Unwinding Anxiety. Dr. Brewer's TED talk in 2016, "A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit," has been viewed extensively. Dr. Brewer has trained business leaders, government ministers, coaches, and Olympic athletes.

Alicia Perry BCBA D is a clinical psychologist and Relapse Prevention Specialist dedicated to helping families and individuals of all ages better understand and manage their mental health challenges. She has more than 15 years of experience teaching courses in psychology and behavior analysis and provides tailored treatment services for issues such as autism, ADHD, addiction, behavioral disorders, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who are working with individuals with anxiety issues and want to become more knowledgeable about strategies for treating anxiety. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Recognize that anxiety patterns can be a habit loop much like addictions such as gaming, so that potential clients may be guided to be aware of anxiety habit loops.
  2. 2 Identify the influence of self-awareness and mindfulness on anxiety patterns and treatment success.
  3. 3 Describe the influence of reward systems on how your brain makes decisions and the changes to any undesirable (or desirable) habits.
  4. 4 Explain the influence of curiosity and a growth mindset on mastery of challenges. Be able to use a growth mindset to recognize mistakes as a learning opportunity so it is possible to master patterns of anxiety.
  5. 5 Cite specific statistics on treatment outcome research on treatment for anxiety.
