About the Course

Managing Group Dynamics and Conflict in Person Centered Recovery Groups is a practical, easy to follow training that prepares you for what really happens when people come together for group support in addiction recovery. In real groups, you will see strong emotions, misunderstandings, conflict, quiet members, talkative members, cliques, boundary issues, and attendance problems. These moments do not mean the group is failing. They are normal and expected.

In this course, you will learn how to stay calm and grounded when group tension shows up, how to protect safety without shaming anyone, and how to guide tough moments with empathy and respect. You will practice simple strategies for handling conflict, giving everyone a chance to speak, and setting clear limits in a way that still feels supportive. You will also learn how to use group guidelines, check ins and check outs, and the group’s own strengths to build trust and keep the group focused on recovery.

By the end, you will feel more confident managing challenging group moments, supporting healthy communication, and helping the group turn conflict and disruption into opportunities for healing, connection, and growth.

His primary goal is to provide consultation to social workers who are involved with child-protective services and In-Home Services. Danny also has 10+ years of experience working with individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability and substance use. Danny’s professional interests include addictions/recovery, intellectual disability, foster care, military, trauma, and domestic violence.

Target Audience

This course is intended for Addictions and Behavioral Health professionals, including counselors, marriage & family therapists, art therapists, school psychologists, music therapists, behavior analysts, school counselors, and addiction counselors. It is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Identify common group dynamics in recovery groups (conflict, silence, over talking, cliques, strong emotions, boundary issues) and explain why these patterns are normal.
  2. 2 Demonstrate person centered strategies to manage conflict and disruptive behaviors, including de escalation, reflective responses, and fair limit setting that protects safety and respect.
  3. 3 Apply simple group structures and tools (clear guidelines, check in and check out, inclusive prompts) to strengthen trust, engagement, and recovery focused progress.
