About the Course

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who provide services to or seek knowledge about the mechanisms that underlie alcohol and tobacco dependence. Whether unfamiliar or familiar with some of the concepts involved in this material, you can benefit from information in this course. The book provides help in understanding and addressing the problem of poor compliance among clients who have substance abuse disorders, including those with dual disorders. You will identify ways in which poor compliance reveals itself; discuss effects of poor compliance on the client, family, and professional caregiver; and identify multiple factors contributing to compliance problems.

The major thrust of the course discusses a variety of practical clinical strategies and treatment system interventions that can help improve compliance among clients with substance abuse or dual disorders. Considerable attention is given to interventions counselors can use to motivate clients…from the initial telephone call through aftercare counseling.

Dennis C. Daley, Ph. D. is the director of the Center for Psychiatric and Chemical Dependency Services and an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has written over 125 publications.

Allan Zuckoff, M.A., is a clinical supervisor and codirector of training at the Center for Psychiatry and Chemical Dependency Services, Western Psychiatric Institute and clinic, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is a trainer in Motivational Interviewing.
