About the Course

As tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of mortality in the United States, differential rates of smoking and use of other tobacco products is a significant contributor to health disparities among some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

Target Audience

This course is recommended for all behavioral health and medical professionals. The course is appropriate for all levels of clinicians and the content is at the beginner level.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe the prevalence and social cost of various forms of tobacco use to society, especially with regard to youth, smoking during pregnancy, and tobacco use among individuals having mental disorders.
  2. 2 Explain how tobacco delivers its effects and the resultant physical health consequences for various demographic/age groups.
  3. 3 Discuss current therapeutic efforts, including treatment approaches, preventive strategies, and medications used to support cessation efforts.
