About the Course

Despite the fact that women are increasingly joining the military and are exposed to traumatic events, veteran’s mental health research has traditionally focused on men thus creating a significant gap in our understanding about the needs of female veterans. Given the reported increase of suicide and substance use among veterans, there is a need for scholars to investigate the potential association between substance abuse and suicide among female veterans. The present study provides a literature review of this topic, concluding with identification of research gaps and implications for clinical practice.

This course is based on the reading online article, Suicide and Substance Use Among Female Veterans: a Need for Research created by Shawna L. Carroll Chapman, PhD in 2014.
