About the Course

This course explores brief interventions for alcohol treatment in adolescents. The first article focuses on computer vs therapist brief interventions(BI). Reviews of strategies such as refusal skills, protective behavioral strategies, and coping with negative affect may be particularly salient for reducing alcohol misuse. The second article focuses on integrated 12 step facilitation (iTSF) vs MET/CBT. It assess how each approach affects attendance at 12 step programs and long term benefits.

Maureen A. Walton, M.P.H. Ph. D.

Dr. Walton is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and serves as the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Walton’s overall career goal is to conduct innovative research to maximize public health impact on the prevention and treatment of substance use and violence among adolescents and emerging adults. She has particular expertise in harnessing technology (e.g., web, text messaging, social media, and smartphone apps) for assessment and to assist with intervention delivery (either automated or with therapist assistance).

John F. Kelly, PhD, ABPP

Dr. Kelly is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School - the first endowed professor in addiction medicine at Harvard. Dr. Kelly is a former President of the American Psychological Association's (APA) Society of Addiction Psychology, and is a Fellow of the APA and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, chapters, and books in the field of addiction medicine.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
