About the Course

This study explores the relationship between psychological well-being and cognitive aging across diverse racial groups, including Black, Native American, and White participants from the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Using race-stratified regression models, the study assessed how specific aspects of psychological well-being (e.g., life satisfaction, positive affect, and sense of purpose) are associated with cognitive performance in executive functioning and episodic memory. The findings suggest that life satisfaction is positively associated with better executive function across all groups, while the relationships between other well-being measures and cognitive outcomes vary by race. The study highlights the importance of including diverse populations in dementia research to better understand these associations and tailor interventions accordingly.

Dr. Carol A. Van Hulle is an Associate Scientist at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. She has extensive research experience in cognitive aging and statistical modeling. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.
