About the Course

This course examines the implementation of cannabis legalization and what and how prevention professionals can respond. It includes: the difference between marijuana and cannabis, changes in potency, proposed changes in federal regulation, substantial and moderate evidence of harm, age of initiation as is related to SUD, how legalization impacts academic achievement, and root causes at the community level.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Navigating the Green Wave-Strategies for Local Response to Cannabis Legalization created by South Southwest PTTC in 2024.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss the increased potency of cannabis.
  2. 2 Identify associated harms of cannabis use.
  3. 3 Describe the root causes of youth substance misuse at the community level.
