About the Event

Adolescent substance use presents unique developmental and clinical challenges that require specialized intervention strategies and engagement techniques. This presentation explores effective, evidence-based approaches to working with youth experiencing substance use issues.

Participants will learn early identification and screening practices, techniques to enhance engagement, and evidence-based interventions to support adolescents in navigating substance use challenges. Attendees will gain practical tools to strengthen protective factors, improve treatment engagement, and support sustainable recovery outcomes.

The training will highlight at least 25 key considerations for effectively working with adolescents with substance use problems.

Christie Turner, NCC, LCADC, LPCC-S, CCS

Christie Turner is a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor, and a Certified Clinical Supervisor in the state of Kentucky. In October 2023, Christie traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark and attended 3 days of training to become a member of MINT, the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. She has worked for Kentucky River Community Care, Inc. for 25 years in various roles and is currently a clinical supervisor, trainer, and consultant. Her favorite evidenced-based practice is Motivational Interviewing as it has personally changed her life and the lives of many others she has worked with over the years. Christie resides in Booneville, KY with her husband and two dogs. She loves to read, travel, walk, and study research on how people change. Christie believes we all possess what we need to change our lives and live up to our full potential. It just takes one caring individual to help us realize this.

Target Audience

This live interactive webinar is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe at least six key aspects of adolescence and their impact on substance use treatment outcomes.
  2. 2 Differentiate between common myths and facts about adolescent substance use and describe the scope of the issue.
  3. 3 Identify at least ten strategies to improve engagement and relationship-building with adolescents.
  4. 4 Describe at least three approaches to support youth in developing skills to navigate substance use challenges.
