About the Event

Advances in cardiopulmonary support technologies—including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), and heart transplantation—have transformed survival for patients with advanced cardiac and pulmonary failure. As a result, rehabilitation professionals are increasingly managing patients across the continuum who are supported by these complex therapies, often while critically ill. These patients present with unique physiologic challenges, including altered hemodynamics, device dependence, prolonged immobility, and multi-system impairments that require specialized clinical reasoning and coordinated interdisciplinary care.

This live interactive course provides an integrated, case-based approach to rehabilitation for patients receiving advanced cardiopulmonary support. Participants will develop an understanding of the underlying physiology, medical management, and device-specific considerations that influence rehabilitation decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on safe and effective mobilization strategies, progression across phases of care (ICU to post-acute), and navigating clinical complexity. Through real-world cases, learners will gain practical tools to optimize mobility, support recovery, and contribute meaningfully to outcomes in this high-acuity population.

Live Event This is a live online event. It will be conducted via Zoom Webinar.

She is passionate about ICU rehabilitation and outcomes especially for complex patient populations including mechanical circulatory support and ECMO. Dr. Whitlock is actively involved in research and has presented at local and national conferences on topics including ICU physical therapy, ECMO, advanced mechanical support, and COVID-19.

Target Audience

This live interactive is intended for Physical Health professionals, including physical therapists and occupational therapies. It is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Differentiate the physiologic principles and clinical indications of ECMO, LVAD, and heart transplantation and their implications for rehabilitation.
  2. 2 Integrate device-specific considerations, hemodynamics, and patient presentation to guide safe and effective rehabilitation interventions in patients receiving advanced cardiopulmonary support.
  3. 3 Apply clinical decision-making strategies to determine readiness for mobility, progression of activity, and modification of interventions in medically complex patients.
  4. 4 Develop and communicate rehabilitation plans that support functional recovery and participation while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary care team.
