About the Course

This intermediate and above level course is tailored for counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and social workers seeking to enhance their expertise in addressing substance use disorders (SUD) among justice-involved adolescents. This course will include Understanding the Prevalence of Substance Use Disorders (SUD) among Justice-Involved Adolescents, Identifying Factors Influencing the Completion of SUD Treatment among Justice-Involved Adolescents, and Exploring Treatment Approaches to Substance Use and Misuse within the Juvenile Justice System. It is important to examine the unique challenges justice-involved adolescents face in completing SUD treatment. We will also identify individual, familial, and systemic factors influencing treatment completion rates. By the end of this course, participants will have gained specialized knowledge and practical insights into the complexities surrounding SUD among justice-involved adolescents. The content is structured to empower mental health professionals to make informed and impactful contributions to the well-being and rehabilitation of this unique population.

Micah E. Johnson, PhD
Dr. Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at the University of South Florida. His research focuses on substance use among underserved pediatric populations. Dr. Johnson has published 2 books and over 20 scientific articles.
Dieu X. Tran
Dieu X. Tran is a research trainee at the University of Florida at the Study of Teen Opioid Misuse and Prevention (STOMP) Laboratory. Her research focuses on substance abuse and treatment outcomes among adolescents.

Kathryn Held, Psy.D., CADC III

Kathryn Held, Psy. D associate and CADC III, is an individual therapist at Visions adolescent treatment centers. With a decade of experience in the mental health field, Kathryn specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, OCD, and the OCD spectrum. Kathryn also has expertise in working with LGBTQ+ adolescents while navigating complex family systems. Her current research projects include adolescent suicide and the use of OCD art interventions in anxiety and OCD treatment. She is trained in CBT, ACT and Exposure and Response Prevention. Her empathetic and artistic approach helps support, educate, and instill agency in her clients. Prior to joining the Visions team, Kathryn worked in various treatment settings including detox, sober living, and as the Program Director of a dual diagnosis outpatient treatment center.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who work with justice involved youth. This course is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.
