About the Course

This article provides a comprehensive review of the effectiveness and cost-benefits of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and clinically delivered 12-Step Facilitation (TSF) interventions for alcohol use disorder (AUD). The review consolidates findings from 27 studies, encompassing 10,565 participants, and assesses AA/TSF interventions in comparison to other treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapy (MET). The review highlights that AA/TSF interventions are at least as effective as other treatments for various drinking-related outcomes and often superior in achieving continuous abstinence and remission. Additionally, AA/TSF interventions demonstrate significant healthcare cost savings. John F. Kelly, PhD
Dr. Kelly is a researcher and professor of addiction medicine at Harvard Medical School and a past president of the APA Society of Addiction Psychology. His research focuses on addiction recovery, self-help groups and substance use related disorders. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and chapters in the field of addiction science and is currently an Associate Editor for several academic journals in the addiction field.
Alexandra Abry
Alexandra holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology and is the director of Operation and Finance at Recovery Research Institute. While at the Recovery Research Institute, Alexandra worked on the Cochrane review on Alcoholics Anonymous and 12-Step Facilitation, a SAMHSA systematic review on recovery support services. She has published 12 works in peer reviewed journals
