Renewal General Info:
Chemical Dependency Counselors (CDCA Renewable): A total of thirty (30) hours of field related continuing education is required for each two year renewal period. Of this education, six (6) hours must be specific to Substance Abuse Disorder and three (3) hours must be in Ethics.

- Individuals who hold the LICDC-CS credentials must also show six (6) hours of education in clinical supervision topics.
- Individuals who hold the renewable Gambling credential must show six (6) hours of gambling specific education.

All professionals with an ADC Reciprocal Endorsement/Certificate need 40 CE’s for renewal instead of 30.

Prevention Professionals: A total of forty (40) hours of field related continuing education is required for each two year renewal period. Of this education, six (6) hours must be from content area P6 (Professional Growth & Responsibility) and three (3) in ethics.

CDCA – Preliminary: Forty (40) hours of chemical dependency specific education. For full information, click the Credentials tab, or go here.

CDCA – Assistant/Renewable: Thirty (30) hours of chemical dependency specific education (completed after obtaining CDCA Phase I status). For full information click the credentials tab, or go here.

LCDC II: An Associate’s degree in a behavioral science or nursing OR a Bachelor’s degree in any field.
One year (2,000 hours) of chemical dependency counseling related compensated work or supervised internship experience.
180 hours of chemical dependency education in nine specific content areas.
220 practical experience hours in the twelve core functions. This may be completed as part of your work experience requirements.
Successful completion of the ADC examination or completion of Examination Waiver Form. 50% of the total education hours must have been completed within the last five years from application.

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant - Preliminary

Effective 4/1/2024, all CDCA Preliminary applicatations must include a 1 CEU certificate of completion for "OCDP CDCA Ethics Course" hosted on eBased Academy. This course is linked within our CDCA Preliminary Curriculum.

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant - Renewable

For initial, the OCPB requires 30 hours of CEU's and holding a CDCA Preliminary for 10 months. please apply at least 2 ½ months prior to the expiration date of your CDCA PRE For renewal, the OCDPB requires 30 hours of CEU’s. Of those 30 hours, 6 hours must be SUD specific and 3 hours must be in ethics.

Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor - Clinical Supervisor

Initial - The minimum number of hours in each area is four credits. These total 20 hours. The remaining 10 hours may be distributed among the areas at the applicant’s discretion. We currently only offer 1.5 credits in content area S5.

Please make sure there is a G category for any courses that you take. Initial - at least 4 hours in each content area within the 30 hours

Credential Renewal

Registered Applicant – Prevention

Please only take courses from the Prevention category.- The RA can only be awarded one time. It cannot be renewed. RA's should apply for the OCPSA certificate as soon as they obtain 100 hours of prevention work experience hours (not required to be in all prevention domains) and the required prevention education.

Certified Prevention Specialist Assistant

Initial - Completion of Forty-five (45) hours of Specific Prevention Education

  • Work experience of at least 100 hours of prevention related work experience (paid or volunteer) completed after obtaining RA Renewal - 3 in Content Area P6 and 1.5 Prevention Ethics

Certified Prevention Specialist

Initial - A minimum of an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited school or university.
24 hours of AOD prevention 2,000 hours (approximately one year) prevention work experience (paid or volunteer) which includes documentation of at least 120 hours of Practical work experience hours in the IC&RC Prevention Domains Renewal - 6 in Content Area P6 and 3.0 Prevention Ethics

Certified Prevention Consultant

Initial - 60 hours of administrative or supervisory education which includes Personnel Supervision & Program Management (minimum of 20 hours) and Administrative & Consultation Education (minimum of 20 hours) content areas. NOTE: AddictionCounselorCE does not offer Prevention Supervision courses. six thousand hours of documented compensated work experience in prevention, including at least four thousand hours of administering or supervising the services. Since two thousand hours of work experience was obtained to obtain the OCPS, only the 4000 hours of administering or supervising prevention services after receiving the OCPS certification is needed Renewal - 6 in Content Area P6 and 3.0 Prevention Ethics
