About the Course

This course reviews culturally tailored substance use interventions for Indigenous adults in North America. Through a systematic review of 18 studies, participants will explore the prevalence of substance use disorders (SUD) among Indigenous populations, the importance of culturally integrated treatment approaches, and key gaps in service accessibility. The course highlights how community-driven strategies and Indigenous systems of knowledge contribute to improved substance use outcomes and offers insights into enhancing culturally relevant programming.

Ariel M.S. Richer, LMSW

Ariel M.S. Richer is a former NIH T32 Pre-Doctoral Fellow at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. She is a licensed master social worker whose work focuses on Indigenous and Black women's access to services through community-based participatory research. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Ariel L. Roddy, Ph.D.

Ariel L. Roddy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Utah. Her research centers on economic marginalization and barriers to reentry for women of color in the justice system. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
