About the Event

This advanced interactive training offers an in-depth somatic framework for understanding boundary rupture and restoration through the lens of the autonomic nervous system. Drawing from Somatic Experiencing and polyvagal theory, participants will examine nuanced clinical presentations where boundary collapse is common, deepen their understanding of embodied defense responses, engage in experiential boundary mapping and regulation practices, and develop more advanced clinical interventions for restoring boundary function from the inside out across complex client populations.

Live Event This is a live online event. It will be conducted via Zoom Webinar.

It is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe the neurobiological basis of boundary function and boundary rupture using the Somatic Experiencing model and polyvagal theory.
  2. 2 Identify somatic presentations of boundary disruption across four distinct clinical populations.
  3. 3 Compare the boundary patterns associated with each of the three polyvagal states — ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal.
  4. 4 Apply a minimum of three embodied boundary restoration practices within a trauma-informed clinical framework.
  5. 5 Analyze the clinical sequencing of somatic boundary work including pacing, titration, contraindications, and cultural considerations.
  6. 6 Evaluate their own nervous system state and boundary patterns as a clinical tool in session.

Event Agenda

Agenda times are listed in US Eastern Time. That is 3 hours later than US Pacific Time. The event starts at 7:00am US Pacific Time.

10-11:15am

  • Welcome, housekeeping, and opening grounding practice
  • Learning objectives and deep dive into the SE/polyvagal framework — including the kinesphere as a three-dimensional neurobiological structure, not just a metaphor
  • Part One: The Neurobiology of Boundaries — rupture as universal trauma symptom, the three-zone radar system, how each polyvagal state produces a distinct boundary pattern, physical boundary versus energetic boundary versus psychological boundary

11:15-11:30am — Break

11:30-1:30pm

  • Population One: Fawn/People-Pleasing — the suppressed "no," somatic signs, incomplete fight response masquerading as agreeableness, case vignette
  • Population Two: Enmeshment/Codependency — porous kinesphere, difficulty self-referencing, absorbed affect, developmental roots, case vignette
  • Population Three: Dissociative Shutdown — the absent boundary, numbness as protection, dorsal collapse and the disappeared membrane, case vignette
  • Population Four: Survivors of Interpersonal Violence and Chronic Boundary Violation — rupture in a specific direction, the boundary rupture map, orienting deficits, hypervigilance patterning, case vignette

1:30-2pm — Lunch

2-3:30pm

  • Experiential Practice 1: Skin boundary awareness (individual) with debrief
  • Experiential Practice 2: Kinesphere/personal space bubble — pushing out, sensing resistance, finding the edge (individual) with debrief
  • Experiential Practice 3: Stepping forward dyadic exercise (breakout rooms) with full group debrief
  • Experiential Practice 4: Embodied "no" — connecting to the incomplete defensive response, finding the "no" in the body before the words, practicing a physical and then verbal boundary in dyads

3:30-4:30pm

  • Live clinical application: Walk through of how to sequence this work in session — when to introduce it, pacing, titration, what to do when it activates the client
  • Clinician self-assessment: Your own boundary patterns and NS state as a tool in session — joining versus merging, countertransference and the body
  • Contraindications, cultural considerations, and adapting for telehealth

4:30-4:45pm Closing practice and Q&A
